Can I drink alcohol on the keto diet?

So you want to keep drinking alcohol while on the keto diet? There are some important things to know before you drink alcohol while on the keto diet.

How does alcohol affect my keto diet?

Good news is that you may not have to avoid all alcohol to stay in ketosis. Your body will burn alcohol before burning fat, so drinking will only slow down your weight loss progress on the keto diet. It will slow down you rate of ketosis.

Important note, without carbs in your belly, the effects of alcohol will hit you faster when on keto. The liver is busy producing ketones or glucose, and thus has less capacity to spare for burning alcohol, slowing down the process.

When on the keto diet, most people need significantly less alcohol to get intoxicated. So be careful the first time you drink alcohol while on the keto diet. Since you may only need half as many drinks as usual to enjoy yourself. A benefit, it will save you money at the bar.

On the keto diet this may be even more crucial, drinking while on the keto diet can make your hangovers worse. Important note, low carb alcoholic drinks in moderation is acceptable, but while on the keto diet even fewer alcoholic drinks, since there is a higher possibility of intoxication faster.

How many carbs in a typical glass of alcohol?

To understand how many carbs are in a typical glass of alcohol take a look at the carb chart below. To stay in ketosis while drinking alcoholic drinks, not all alcoholic options are equal.


The keto bottom line is each of the numbers is the grams of carbs per serving in a typical glass as shown. The lowest carb option is:

              • Flute of champagne with 1 gram of carbs
              • Dry white and red wine have about 2 grams
              • A typical beer has 13 grams of carbs

Champagne and dry white wine can be enjoyed on a regular basis if you are eating a moderate low carb keto diet approximately 20 to 50 carbs a day. Sweeter wines have about 4 carbs in a typical glass.

Beer is a no-no when you are on the keto diet. Its hops and fermented grains are like drinking liquid bread and can produce big beer bellies. It is not a good choice for weight loss or diabetes reversal.

How many carbs for Spirits?

To understand how many carbs are in a typical glass of hard alcohol take a look at my carb chart below. If you drink hard liquor, this is how many grams of carbs in a typical drink.

              • Whiskey, Brandy, Tequila, Martini, Vodka & BPI, Vodka & Soda water these all contain 0 carbs
              • Bloody Mary has 7 carbs
              • Margarita has 8 carbs
              • Cosmopolitan has 13 carbs
              • Gin & Tonic has 16 carbs
              • Vodka & Orange juice has 16 carbs
              • Rum & Coke has 39 carbs

Whiskey, brandy, tequila, martini, and the other spirits that have 0 carbs that don’t have juice, soft drink, or other sweeteners like sweet cream. If tonic is added to gin it changes its carbs to 16 grams per serving. Vodka & orange juice may seem like a healthy choice, but it gives you 28 grams of carbs which is almost as bad as rum & coke for 39 grams.

Another option is vodka, soda water and lime instead for a 0 carbs alcoholic drink. However, my own choice is vodka & BPI sports supplement drink which has 0 carbs even though it is mixed with flavored fruit juice.

It is my own special drink I created to replace using a sweetener. This is the only alcoholic drink I have found helps lessen the hangover tremendously. This may be unorthodox but this works for me. I first mix the BPI Sports Supplement according to the directions and add as much as I would to a rum & coke drink.

How many carbs in a cooler?

These drinks are far from cool. The amount of carbs, which is basically sugar in a bottle.

                  • Smirnoff Ice has 31 carbs
                  • Breezer has 39 carbs

Smirnoff ice tastes like sprite with a kick and is very tasty on a hot summer day. It is the same thing as drinking sugar. Sometimes called alcopops, spirit coolers, wine coolers, or hard lemonades but nonetheless the same. They are pre-mixed package drinks that are loaded with sugar and carbs. Do not drink if you want to stay true to your keto diet.

Can you still beer me without any carbs?

The brands of beer represents the grams of carbs in a 12 oz. (355 ml) bottle of beer.

              • Budweiser Select 55 has 1.9 carbs
              • Michelob Ultra has 2.6 carbs
              • Budweiser Select has 3.1 carbs
              • Natural Light has 3.2 carbs
              • Miller Lite has 3.2 carbs
              • Bud Ice has 4 carbs
              • Coors Light has 5 carbs
              • Bud Light has 7 carbs
              • Beck’s has 9 carbs
              • Victoria Bitter has 11 carbs
              • Budweiser has 11 carbs
              • Heineken has 11 carbs
              • Stella Artois has 13 carbs
              • New Castle Brown Ale has 13 carbs
              • Sapporo has 18.6 carbs

According to the beer chart there are no beers with 0 carbs. Only some very light American beers contain the least amount of carbs and can be drunk on the keto diet. The other brands of beer has more carbs and should be avoided completely if you want to stay in ketosis on your keto diet.

Top 5 keto alcoholic drinks

Even on the keto diet you can still enjoy 1 or 2 delicious drinks on special occasions. There are some decent low carb options even though many alcoholic drinks contain a lot of sugar. Here’s my list of the top 5 keto alcoholic drinks that are low carb.

1. Vodka & BPI – one glass contains 0 grams of net carbs.

There must be a reason why humans have been drinking wine for centuries. One of them is probably that it tastes really good with food. Martin Luther even said that, “Beer is made by men, wine by God”. Fortunately, drinking an occasional glass of wine is acceptable on the keto diet.

It is okay to drink alcohol on the keto diet and stay in ketosis. The keto diet is just a different way of looking at food and eating. It is a healthy option producing results and keeps you looking spectacular too.

Eating high amounts of fat, moderate amounts of protein, and low amounts of carbs will naturally boost your body’s ability to burn fat. Alcohol may slow down your body in ketosis, but if it’s your preference to drink you can do it without a guilty conscience.

  1. It’s nice to learn that we can still drink some alcohol on keto diet. I don’t drink it regularly, but sometimes I need to when entertain my business partner. I like whiskey and white wine, so I will keep in mind to order those when the time comes. Being in keto diet make me too careful about what I should and shouldn’t eat, and I think I should make a checklist for it 🙂
